Trusting Your Body

I trust that my body is fearfully and wonderfully made and will keep me alive and well. I never wake up wondering if one of my organs will fail or if one of my limbs won’t work. But sometimes, I wake up and my nose is stuffy, my throat is scratchy, and my chest is tight. Somewhere along the way, my body might have just picked up a virus. I trust that my body will do everything it can to fight it off. I can just leave it at that and trust my body to work it out on its own, or I can grab a decongestant or expectorant to help it fight and feel better faster.

What if we felt that way about our bodies when it comes to birth? Getting pregnant, growing a baby, and birthing a baby is as normal and natural as breathing, right?

What about when it’s not?

Sometimes assistance is needed to help our bodies conceive. Sometimes assistance is needed to help carry a pregnancy to full term. Sometimes assistance is needed to birth a healthy baby and keep the birthing person alive. Sometimes, we need other bodies to make our dreams of becoming parents come true. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging that we need help or securing the help we need, even with normal, natural things.

None of this means that your body is broken or less than. It also doesn't mean that your body can't be trusted. It means that we are all different and our bodies don’t all work the same.
